Years ago, when I was first certified in fitness (some 25 years or so), the biggest trend was circuit training.
This was meant to be the way of the future in exercise, especially for fitness clubs. It remains popular, the many stations of various exercises to work the “whole body”,… just review the popularity of the Womens only’s centres, continues to demonstrate, ‘30 minute’ promises sell,…but is this an optimal approach?
The theories that evolved are flawed, there was no science to which the entire industry was built, for that matter, no sport had ever been researched to test if the human body should be put through the rigours of training that evolved from coaches, who typically were Former (and often broken down) athletes who “lived, breathed and knew the game”. So the first thing we are going to urge you to do, is, with an open mind,…decide that you are willing to look at research and science and opt out of the crowd who is being duped by media, industry and sport culture. There are valid and recent researched theories out there, you need to know where to look and how to scrutinize. WE can help with that.
I hope you are still with me, as we begin to look at what is going on at a cellular level,…and then to realize that there is a huge learning ‘curve’ for us to get our head around the concepts of metabolism, genetics, mitochondrial function, muscle function, glycolytic, oxidatve, lactate and creatine phosphate energy systems,…to which there are many. Your can find coaches, coach wannabe’s, and a huge product industry, that is wanting to steer you in the direction that will line their pockets, with little regard for your safety or long term health outcomes. Truth be told, and we all know it, it is also professional sport culture that is keeping us obsessed with ‘being on top’, at all costs.
So, integrative training will be all inclusive, nutrition, balance, flexibility, strength, and endurance training, but under a model that promotes safety and injury and illness prevention as the first priority. Having pain-free longevity and optimal health in the long run, as goals, you should appreciate. Keep reading each week, contribute as you like, supporting all with science and research,…and non-exploitive,…and we have the makings of a great community,…fit and healthy.
BE well,
Dave
